View a Pretty and Practical Kitchen Nook Makeover

Geometric wallpaper, traces of natural substances and thoughtful personal touches fully remodeled this nook in a San Francisco Bay Area kitchen. Interior designer Cristin Priest was tired of this dark space that sat just around the corner from her kitchenand wanted to inject it with color and a feeling of relaxation. A fun new palette and practical additions make this perfect hangout area for her and her kids.

The 6- by 6 1/2-foot nook now has a brand new feel. A mix of cheerful green and warm organic tones creates an inviting area.

BEFORE: Constructed in 1940, Priest’s house had the proof of its era. The nook was initially equipped simply with wooden benches and a Formica table (which had already been replaced when this photo was taken). “It was magical, but it needed a little facelift,” she says.

The kelly green and white Thomas Paul pillow in the corner motivated the new color palette.

AFTER: Patent leather cushions look luxe but are simple to wipe clean. Priest picked something sensible and durable for her kids but loves how the cushions add a chance of glow.

Priest had been admiring the Trellis Manuel Canovas wallpaper for quite a while and thought it could be implemented easily and affordably within this little nook.

Art from her kids and her grandma adds a particular touch. “I really like the way it [the nook] feels,” says Priest. “It’s inviting, private and full of life.”

Here’s the inspiration pillow in its setting. The camellia tree just outside brings a dab of the outdoors into the nook. The butcher block walnut, bamboo blind and hot orange within the Arteriors pendant seem to play the organic outdoor hues. White Pottery Barn Kids frames hold art from Priest’s kids.

Priest had habit pullout drawers built into the existing benches to help maximize space and storage. The brand new butcher block tabletop mimics the shape of the table original Formica top.
