Deliciously Simple: Food Photographer Warms Up a Kitchen

The kitchen is most certainly the distance in houses that is remodeled the many. For tenants and homeowners alike, maybe not having enough room or perfect appliances can limit comfort and culinary imagination in the kitchen. However, for Kimberley Hasselbrink, food photographer and founder of The Year in Food, her rented flat’s kitchen would be the birthplace of her seasonally-inspired culinary masterpieces, despite its less-than-ideal design. Although Hasselbrink’s San Francisco apartment includes a fantastic amount of room, her kitchen is restricted in both storage and size. A lack of natural light was chilling at first, but with a couple quirky thrift finds, playful art and classic accessories, Hasselbrink managed to make the kitchen feel like her very own. Hasselbrink makes the most of her distance by keeping things crisp and clean, accenting with easy but quirky accessories. “Hidden is my response most of the time, unless the thing is both…

Small Wonders

The dictionary program on my iPhone alerts me daily to a”word of the day” The other day it came up with”opuscule,” a word I had never before encountered. It turns out to be a derivation of the Latin term, opus (a bit of literary or musical work, like in Mr. Holland’s Opus). And, just like in Spanish where you could add”ita” to any noun to imply the diminutive of the noun, an individual could add”cule” in Latin to achieve exactly the same result. So”opuscule” literally signifies”diminutive work” or, in this interpretation, a little, endearing literary or artistic composition. There’s a long tradition of architectural opuscule, particularly in general and residential design. By way of example, there are the garden follies of those 19th-century landscapes. In more recent times, there are observation towers, tea houses, garden sheds, detached garages and much more. What they all have in common is their size…

Home Tech: Creating a Media Console Work

Incorporating modern devices into our houses is a perennial dilemma, and that I feel for any designer trying to do it with a measure of design. That is because electronics don’t just sit on a shelf. Power cords are the least of it, but for functionality and safety, appropriate venting, line-of-sight and capability to work with remote controls all need to be taken into account. Fellow Houzz contributor Natalie Myers recently published about stylish possibilities for vintage-style media cabinets. For those who wondered, Where are the cables? Continue reading.
