How to Replace the Pull Start on an Echo Trimmer

Echo weed trimmers use a standard recoil starter. This program includes a cover, a spring, a rope and pulley. The entire meeting butts contrary to the crankshaft, which spins once you pull the starter rope. This repeated friction on the string makes it vulnerable to fraying and breakage. Replacing the rope is an inexpensive and moderately easy DIY project.

Unscrew the screws holding the main engine cap in place. Unplug the spark plug boot. Remove the two little ignition wires located behind the carburetor and clipped onto the cover from unclipping them and lift the cover out of place. Unscrew the screws holding the starter assembly in position, and remove the assembly.

Turn over the meeting to show the spring and pulley system. Unscrew the center screw the retains the mechanism together. Eliminate the pulley, taking care to not permit the spring to fly back, since it could injure you. Unravel the rope from the pulley. Cut the handle free from the rope and set it aside. Cut the knot in the middle of the pulley to publish the rope.

If you are using a length of rope rather than the producer’s string part, use the old rope as a template to cut the proper size. Light a fire with the warm and lighter the ends of the new rope. While it’s still warm and pliable, compress the ends together with your fingertips to make clean ends.

Feed the brand new rope through the hole in the center of the pulley, and tie a knot to hold it in position. Pull the knot tight, and set the rope in the station to bring it to the exterior of the pulley. Ravel the brand new string around the pulley in a counterclockwise direction, leaving roughly 12 inches free. Feed the free end during the meeting cover. Put the pulley back inside the spring system and screw it back into position.

Put the handle on the free end of the rope and tie a knot to secure it into position. Roll any excess rope to the pulley by attaching it to the pulley’s center notch and winding it counterclockwise. Screw the meeting back into position, being sure to align it with the crankshaft. Tug on the rope to encourage it to engage and load the spring.

Snap the two ignition wires back to the cover. Replace the major cover and screw it back into position. Plug in the spark plug boot.
