Blade Options to get a John Deere JS45

Installing a new blade on your own JS45 push mower may stretch the capabilities of your mower prior to trimming the lawn. The JS45 can be used with two types of mower blade that are designed for cutting Grass Care near house Phoenix, AZ and mulching. Installing a new blade is a relatively straightforward process with the ideal tools.

Standard Blade

The JS45 uses a 21-inch high-lift mowing sword designated component number GX22250. The shape of high-lift blades creates aerodynamic lift that can help propel Grass Care service Bakersfield, CA out of the mowing deck and during the discharge chute. The JS45’s standard cutting blade is one blade that mounts with a nut and bolt secured to one hole in the blade’s center. The standard blade can be capable of mulching with the mulch plug installed above the discharge chute and the mower deck raised. This technique of mulching lowers the height of the Grass Care near house Phoenix the mower may cut down.

Mulching Blade

The optional blade for the JS45 is a 21-inch mulching blade designated component number GX22454. This blade has extra cutting surfaces that are intended to finely chop and shred Grass Care service Littleton, CO and other yard waste. The mulching blade attaches with a central nut and bolt, but every end of the blade splits, creating four blades in an X configuration. This increases the cutting area of the blade and drives Grass Care service Phoenix to circulate throughout the blades more, making it more efficient at mulching heavy bud in comparison to the standard blade.

Altering a Blade

Before you switch the blade on your own JS45, disconnect the spark plug and drain the gas tank until it is at least half empty. Tilting the mower on its left side also will help prevent fuel from spilling. The lawn mower blade is held by a bolt and a washer. These are removable with a socket wrench while the blade is held inactive. When the bolt is unscrewed, the washer, the blade and a spacer that fits between the sword and the deck are loose. Wearing heavy gloves helps protect your hands while you are working with a sharp mower blade.

Installing JS45 Blades

Lubricating the threads of the bolt with machine grease or oil helps prevent damage to the bolt and makes it significantly easier to remove later on. Set the bolt and washer through the bottom of the blade with the cupped side of the washer against the blade and the curved, sharp edges of the sword facing upwards. Fit the spacer above the bolt’s threads so its edges fit snugly into the blade and then screw the bolt into the hole you’ve removed it from. According to John Deere, the bolt should be tightened to 40 pound-foot of torque.
