Get Your Edge On: 11 Suggestions for Style in the Fast Lane

Let us go back to 1978. Remember in the film Grease when Olivia Newton-John amazed John Travolta with her edgy appearance? Which detail helped her pull it off? Was it the black leather jacket with its red liner, her teased hair or the crimson lipstick?

What made her appearance edgy? I frequently think about details like this when I place rooms together. In the most traditional spaces, I like to throw in surprise. Edgy touches keep a space from looking too predictable and stodgy. They often happen when we bend the rules so slightly.

Sometimes there are existing details in a space which may be highlighted. Other times, there are little touches which may be added. Obviously, the ideal blend is perfect — not too far, just a touch will do.

If you have a little Sandy on your character, here are some ideas that will assist you pull off that edgy look for your space.

Exposed brick. It’s common to find exposed brick in attic spaces and older buildings. Rather than drywalling or painting on your brick, consider leaving it exposed. I particularly like when the brick is very rustic with cement or plaster on parts of the wall socket.

Boutique Homes

Glam firewood. Create a space for firewood storage that is front and center. Stack it high and add lighting, as you would with an art installation. Firewood close to the firebox is sensible and adds texture to the space.

Exposed pipes. Plumbing does not always have to be buried in a wall. There are many styles of plumbing. Pair this style of pipes with rustic or modern finishes for a sudden edgy detail.

Camber Construction

Trough sink. Trough sinks are fantastic for small common bathrooms. They provide a little additional sink space and offer a twist on the traditional round or oval sink. In addition to providing bathroom counters that border we are searching for, they’re extremely narrow and make decent use of space.

Switch Collaborative

Black and white photography. If you have an opportunity for art positioning that is focal to a space, consider black and white photography. Oversized pieces or a group add a border to even the most traditional spaces.

Stainless Steel. Whether it is on your cabinetry, furniture or shelving, a bit of stainless steel adds a border to any space. Stainless countertops are absolutely practical and provide commercial durability for residential living.

Black doors. Add play and edge by painting interior doors. Not all trim and casings have to be white. Pair black interior doors with crisp white trim and door casings through the home. Try Carbon Duplicate 2117-10 from Benjamin Moore to get a Great black.

Equinox Architecture Inc. – Jim Gelfat

Lose your shower. Glass shower doors are costly. Clients frequently get sticker shock when pricing glass to their bathroom remodels. Think about removing the door from your style for that tiled toilet appearance. Glass doors help maintain heat in; you will lose this function. However, for some folks the notion of a open, zero-threshold shower is appealing. Plus: No longer squeegie duty.

Mix styles. For an eclectic look that is definitely edgy, mix designs and daring colour. Here, a traditional portrait which feels French and formal is mixed with a punchy orange desk and whimsical painted seat. This mix isn’t actually connected; it is just interesting collectively. Don’t be reluctant to comparison styles.

Vintage leather. Leather is a no-brainer. It’s edgy and it always is. Classic leather is even more so. Have a look at eBay or your community antique store. If you discover a vintage leather seat, ottoman or sofa that fits your space, go for it. These pieces constantly look great and add an interesting texture to your furniture mix.

Black and crimson. Black is dramatic and crimson is strong; the combination is pure edge. Just like Sandy’s leather jacket with red liner, it is flashy and fun. Think about a red seat, pillow or lamp against black walls or flooring.
